About Harmony

Harmony Church is located in the city of Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island. Harmony is a multi-cultural, mission-minded, Christ-centered and Spirit led community, sharing the love of God in our city and world. The heartbeat of the church is Passion for God and Compassion for People.

Who

Gideon & Catherine Hoekendijk are the Senior Leaders and founders of Harmony Church. They have been married for 29 years and are the proud parents of four children. Gideon was born in Georgetown, Guyana to Missionary parents but grew up in the Netherlands. Catherine, was born in Invercargill and grew up in Christchurch. In 1984 Catherine travelled to Europe to join Youth with a Mission in the Netherlands where she first completed a Discipleship Training Course and then stayed on as staff for a total of 5 years. During this time Gideon and Catherine met due to their common interest in music and were involved in large Christian music events across Europe and Asia. In 1990 they moved to Singapore where they met with Jimmy and Carol Owens, who some have described as the founders of modern Christian music. Together they worked on setting up a School of Music Ministry. This was a training school for musicians that was highly successful and still continues today. In 1991 Gideon and Catherine found themselves back in New Zealand with the birth of their first child, David. In subsequent years they have been part of organising large nationwide Christian events including “Pray for the City”, “March for Jesus”, “Billy Graham Global Mission” and hosting Christian artists such as Graham Kendrick, Bob Fitts, Ron Kenoly and Israel Houghton.

Gideon holds a Masters in Theology. Catherine holds a Bachelor of Music in composition and ethnomusicology and a Diploma in Adult Teaching and Learning. In late 2007 the Hoekendijk’s felt a stirring for a new expression of Church, and in 2008 a group of other like minded people began to gather weekly in their home exploring possibilities. February 15th 2009 saw the beginnings of Harmony Church.

Get Involved

Our volunteer teams are the heart and soul of the Church. Everything that happens both inside and outside the building is facilitated by people, most of them volunteers working together in teams. Volunteer Teams cover everything from worship teams, childrens programmes and the cafe. These people are amazing and we couldn’t do what we do without them!

Areas you can be involved in, either as a participant or volunteer include:

Gatherings: Weekly Sunday meetings; music, production, welcome teams.
